One of the most important
factors in determining the choice of rhetorical strategies is culture. Culture
shaped the belief and values of the people, the group of people affected by the
same culture have a fundamental similarity of what to believe and who to trust,
as well as the way of thinking. For instance, in traditional Chinese culture
ethos, pathos and logos are all considered important, but pathos takes a higher
position than the other two. Chinese speeches and literature often appeal
through ethos by starting with quotation of great and respectable figures, this
approach help audience understand the topic and make them easier to accept.
Besides ethos, it is also essential to address pathos and logos in a Chinese
cultural context. Already there is a prevalent Chinese saying that concludes
a good persuasion - “動之以情、曉之以理”.
This means that one should persuade people with情
(emotion) and
convince them with理 (reason). The two elements情 and 理 are close equivalence to
pathos and logos, and the Chinese assumes that following the rule will yield a
mutually beneficial outcome in persuasion. Such
preferences in persuasive orientations can also be seen in modern business
writings. According to Zhu & Hildebrandt (2003), English and Chinese texts
carry on with their classical rhetorical traditions. English texts stress on
logos while in the Chinese texts 情
and 理 are
intertwined. Among the three rhetorical
forms, pathos is the most prominent. The reason behind is the traditional Chinese
culture emphasis on interpersonal relationship, which is a form of pathos. To
sum up, in the example of a Chinese society, resorting to emotional approach
would be more effective.
Even though western culture
has greatly influenced Hong Kong, Hong Kong is essentially a Chinese society
and still the belief and values are dictated by traditional Chinese culture,
particularly Confucianism. Hence, our video has mainly relied on pathos, but we
have also strengthened our standpoint with logos. And from the article “Change through Persuasion”, we got an idea about “Managing
the Mood”. It suggested that the first step was to acknowledge our audiences’
feelings of depression while we were doing this persuasion campaign. (Roberto,
2005) Moreover, taken into consideration that our main
audience are women who use beauty products daily, we attempted to use ethos by
citing from attractive celebrities to uphold the idea
that every woman wanted to shine. Therefore in the beginning
of the video, we brought up the topic by showing a movie clip from a Korean TV
drama “My Love From the Star”, the feminine
lead Miss Quan zhixian (全智賢) was wiping the lipstick elegantly. The TV show received
a bomb hit lately, and promoted a great women makeup shopping boom.
Every woman loved her beauty,
and wished to gain the same attraction as she did. The second step was to knock
out the idea about its wrong to let animals- human’s friends suffer the brutal
animal tests, and showed our audience that we should focus on the continuing
hard work ahead. So we inserted several cruel pictures about animal test to
arouse the very contrast and complicated mood of our audience.
We believe that
Hong Kong people are passionate about animals. As stated in a 2006
survey conducted by the Census and Statistics Department, 286,300 (1 in every
8) households in Hong Kong were keeping pets, and the number has continued to
rise in recent years. Although being only a small island on the map, Hong Kong
has at least 9 world famous animal welfare organizations running here actively
protecting animal welfare Note1.
Recently, there has been an increasing number of animal abuse case
reported on the media, however, the number of abuse cases reported to police is
actually declining Note 2. This divergence is a strong proof that
the awareness of animal welfare in Hong Kong is rocketing as people now have
very low tolerance for animal cruelty. “The principle of consistency: People align with their clear
commitments.” (Cialdini, 2001) This principle
inspires us that the people who care about animals and who keep pets are our
premier targets. It would not be too hard for our video clip to attract the existing
Hong Kong pet lovers’ audiences to generate a small commitment, as they are all
compassionate. And in this research, it indicated “how even a small commitment
can have a powerful effect on further actions”. Afterward, we hope the
principle of social proof could show its magic, as “People follow the lead of
similar others”. (Cialdini, 2001) The friends,
neighbours and colleagues of our audience could be touched by this idea.
On top of that, we apply the
‘golden rule’ in our video to persuade our audience. Legget
suggests that to successfully apply the golden rule, it is important to understand
the situation and be able to imagine its consequence. (Legget, 2012) The general public in Hong Kong is sensitive about
fairness and justice, especially if it is an issue of corporate social
responsibility (CSR). It is because Hong Kong people have high demand for
business ethics and believe that corporations should repay the society for what
they have earned. “Numbers do not
make an emotional impact, but stories and vivid language do.” (Conger, 1998)
We
appeal to pathos once again by presenting our audience the pictures of inhumane
treatments received by totally helpless animals during animal experiments, pictures of anti-animal-testing campaign, and a
passionate speech about how animals should be treated as our friends but not
products that used for human beauty.Through graphics we visualized the feeling of the
animals and let the audience ask themselves if they are in the reversed role of
animals. It is to associate those animal
tested products with bad feelings, and convince our audience to avoid buying
products from the unethical companies.
What’s more there are
already alternatives to animal testing as technology progresses. Instead of
testing on animals, companies can use approved non-animal tests to check their
products, such as using reconstituted human skin donated from cosmetic surgery.
Human body is not the same as that of animals, when it is safe for animals does
not mean it is also safe for human.
There is one
good saying: “Persuasion promotes understanding; understanding breeds acceptance;
acceptance leads to action.” We believe after watching our
video, somehow we could persuade Hong
Kong people on a cognitive
level that the brutal animal tests are real in our life; on an emotional level,
hopefully we could arouse more sympathy of Hong Kong people; finally, people will act to
buy less of those animal tested cosmetics, eventually drive out all animal
testing practice in the beauty product industry. (Roberto, 2005)

回复删除Thank your for your video. It’s really nice.
People, especially woman would do anything to look beautifully. When people are crazy about the cosmetics, they don’t realize this kind of beauty is on the cost of the animals. The first video shocks me because it starts with what most people usually do: buy lots of cosmetics. Then showing the lovely animals that are treated badly because they are used for testing. This could make people reflect on what do we done to animals because they are our friends. Then the answers and reflects of the chairman, the judger of the second video seems strength the feeling that animals are our friends.
I like the idea that use donated human skin as the alternatives. It’s a solution that is beneficial for both animals and human. Seems it is also the way to recycle the medical waste! Besides, I also find other alternative ways, such as in vitro (test tube) test methods and models based on human cell and tissue cultures; computerized patient-drug databases and virtual drug trials; computer models and simulations; stem cell and genetic testing methods;non-invasive imaging techniques such as MRIs and CT Scans;microdosing (in which humans are given very low quantities of a drug to test the effects on the body on the cellular level, without affecting the whole body system)
But I also think it is important to convince people to believe that the cosmetics tested on donated human skin is safer than tested with animals. Such as:
Alternative scientific tests are often more reliable than animal tests.
The use of human tissue in toxicity testing is more accurate than the animal models.
Non-animal tests are more cost-effective, practical, and expedient.
Cruelty-free products are more environmentally friendly.
Dear Huijuan,
删除Thanks for your creative ideas about use the cosmetics test on donated human skin instead of lively animals at first.
From our perspective, it is no matter what kind of substitutes are taken in cosmetics testing, we must cherish the life which can not be deprived as random for any purpose.
And we hope we can change from ourselves after we know this leaping bunny label and see this video.
Thanks again.

回复删除Hello, group Sparks Concentration Camp. Good video! Your video is quite longer than other groups. I think you must more efforts on it. After watched the video, I have many opinions want to share with your group.
1. Good topic! This is the first impression after I watched. I am so sad about the issue you mentioned in your video. But I know it really exits. I have learned a lot of new information from your video. And I totally agree with your position.
2. You do well in catching people’s eyes. I must mention you are so smart! You use the hot Korean TV series. I think if we want to persuade people, we need attractive them first. Then you give the topic about don’t use animal to testing. And you also related to Hong Kong culture.
3. I like the ways you persuade. You use cartoon which reflect the process of how human use animal to testing, it is vivid than data. And you use comparison in your video. Some people did bad thing like test by animals while also exists someone resist to do that. And audiences will know how to do in the future.
4. But I also have some suggestions I hope you think it will be useful. First, I know you pay more efforts on this video, but it is a bit long foe audiences. You know Hong Kong people are so busy, I think we should put the most important party in our video and let them know how to do.
5. Second, I suggest you can use less pictures after the TV play, just few would be good I think. Because we just need highlight the issue, too much maybe reduce people attractive.
6. Last, how about give some evidences about people who have been published by use animal to testing? I am not sure if there have relevant laws or regulations. But I think punishment is a powerful tool to reduce this cruel activity.
Hope my suggestion can be useful. And thank you again for give me a good lesson. I think if people saw your video, there would have less testing.
Dear 马天珩
删除Thanks very much about your pretty suggestion at first.
Yes, we agree that the video is a little big longer after i read your comments, it is very important to extract the main idea and show it during a short time to save audience's precious time.
In addition, before we done this video, we really find some related laws which against these inhumane activities, but we afraid that the law is so formal and boring so we didn't put it into our video, however, we did convey the information that the EU had already banned this activities and we showed it in our video but did highlight it.
Overall, thanks for your kindly suggestion.

回复删除Overall, I really appreciate that you team do quite good job. The video clip really shocks me since I am animal lover. I have own pet that I regard it as my little brother. His name is “Robert”. "He" is huntaway. Every time "he" does some gesture or funny actions, it makes me have really good feeling. So I strong agree that animals are human being’s good friend. They have equivalent right to enjoy the life. People cannot sacrifice their freedom and health to satisfy the selfish need of human being. Many kinds of animals can rescue people’s illness. For example, dolphin and dogs can help autistic children to decrease the state of illness.
You show us the clear and convincing data and evidence to show the tendency of Hong Kong people of loving animals. I heard of the news about bullying cat. Hong Kong government has powerful authority and law to protect the interests of animals. They will investigate the case to find out the person who bullied the little cat.
You use the famous Korean drama “the love from the star” and famous movie “Legally Blonde” to attract the audience. At least I am interested in your video clip and movie since I am the fan of “the love from the star”. And you use the role exchange technique that assumes people being involved in test to emphasize the dark side of animal test. It is quite effective to persuade people.
On the other hand, I think your report can add some data that which brands are still using animal test. I found the link that listing the name of brand including the mother company in bracket as following: http://www.mediapeta.com/peta/PDF/companiesdotest.pdf. The famous brand like 3M, Biotherm, Bobbi Brown, Clean & Clear and DOLCE & GABBANA are all in the dark list. Therefore, customers can judge the ethical and unethical things by their own perception to decide whether use these brands. What is more, I also found the name list of stopping animal test (refer to http://www.mediapeta.com/peta/PDF/companiesdonttest.pdf).
Finally, I have one question to ask. I do search information about these kinds of technologies. It said there is a wide range of non-animal research techniques that, as well as being a humane approach to science can also be cheaper, quicker and more effective. These include cell, tissue and organ cultures; methods using chemistry, computers or imaging machines and studies using human volunteers. But why so many companies still are using animal test to test, some company even are global and big scale company? What is the relationship between social responsibility of organization and animal test for these big scale companies?
Dear KAILIN,
删除It is appreciating that you can come up with such meaningful question for us, which means you really care about animal testing and our assignment.
I read some information as you mentioned in your comment, yes, with the development of technology, scientist already invented some substitutes for animals. However, as we know, animal testing experiencing a long time since the cosmetics was invented. It is not easy for company to change, just like the computer, we know computer can do a lot of things and improve the efficiency, however, since the computer born to the popular in company, it was really a long time. and during this period, it was necessary for people to know how smart the smart the computer is, and then, it also took time for people to learn it, at last, the computer became so common in life.
Hence, it is not easy for people to change the traditional method and ideas, so that's why we need to create a sense of urgency, we call on consumers to resist the cosmetics which including the animal testing, only when the company find that they would face decrease of the profit and sales revenue if they don't stop animal testing, they will receive the change and apply this new technology.
In addition to that, the relationship between the company and social responsibility actually is not easy to clarify, but i recommend you to read the information from the materials of Organization transforming, which illustrating it very clearly.
删除Thanks for your comment again.

回复删除Hi Spark!
First of all, I am very fond of your topic and the impressing video you made.
Talking about video, I think it’s a brilliant way to start it with a hot TV drama “My Love from the Star”, which make sense in arouse audiences’ attention.
What’s more, you attempted to use ethos by citing from attractive celebrities to uphold the idea that every woman wants to shine and, more importantly, you have taken into consideration that your main audience are women who use beauty products daily.
In addition, you hit the point that the enthusiasm towards pets amongst Hong Kong people is increasing, which means that your video clip will be attracting the existing Hong Kong pet lovers. Thus, it is excellent of you to catch the very point of who would be your potential audience and presented in a way that they may like.
In the video, you used many impressive and shocking pictures animals which are in torment by testing. These can be identified as logos in your persuasion, which arouse audiences’ sense of compassion.
In terms of the written blog, I appreciate that you not only tried to persuade people against animal testing, but also gave out one practical alternative. But maybe more suggestions could be listed so that people may have more alternatives against choosing animal tested cosmetics. I personally have been focusing on this issue for some time and I am a strong opponent to this issue. Here, I searched some information on alternatives to animal testing and want to share a useful link with you:
http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-experimentation/alternatives-animal-testing/
Dear Monica,
删除Thanks for your compliment about our assignment at first.
I do agree that your recommendation that we can find some practical alternatives to resist the animal testing cosmetics. In fact, the written content in blog tried to make audience recognize that the importance of stopping to consume animal testing products rather than find some alternatives. Indeed, perhaps the audience really think they should make change, but how to change? so we believe we can tell you how to find the animal-friendly brands at first, apart from that, find some resources about the substitute of animal in experiment, that would be convinced.
Thanks again.

回复删除It is a good video. I really love it.
As a girl, I can’t live without cosmetic or skin care products. But before watching the video, I have to admit that I don’t know the tests on animals are that brutal. In the video, it is shocking that how the poor little bunny suffers from the tests. And then the video shows us that what the label is and how we can use it to protect animals. It also presents those volunteer activities to people which is quiet persuasive. However, I think the opening of the video could be a little shorter. Using a famous Korean star to attract eyes is very smart, but making a long piece in the opening is not very necessarily and it is easy to distract people’s attention from the real topic.
In the article, you use a traditional Chinese saying “動之以情、曉之以理” to illustrate your theories which is very vivid for Chinese people and make them easier to understand your theories. I am very impressed by it and would like to read afterwards.
Here is one suggestion. Could you provide more information about the approved non-animal tests? I think it is not used in a long-scale in the world, so can you prove it is safe for human?
In general, it’s a good work.
Cheers.
Dear Dou yan,
删除Thank you for you love our work! We found your point is quite valuable. Yes, if we have been show some actual supporting data about how safety for the alternative in animal testing, it would be more convincing!
Actually, these alternative choices of animal testing have been well developed nowadays, however the technique have not been spread worldwide, so some countries still use the simplest way and traditional way---the animal test to check whether it is toxic or not. Scientist have been proved that the alternative method could be more safer and more effective than the traditional animal testing. Moreover, they also found that these alternative choice could be more trust worthy and cost-efficiency.
Please do reference the below website:
http://www.neavs.org/alternatives/in-testing
The website has mentioned technology like three-dimensional human skin equivalent systems such as EpiDerm, SkinEthic and EpiSkin could easily detect whether the products would harm our human. I believe you could find more information in this website, as it benefits our team a lots!
Thank you for your comments!
Not only the cosmetic industry have used the animal test, another industry medicine even have destroyed more. I am a one graduated from medical university and our university even has a whole building to raise the animals like dog, mouse, rabbit and so on for the test use. So when I watch your video, I can understand your empathy for those animals. And you guys did an excellent job in persuading customers from buying those products tested on animals. YOU made audience "feel" the pain which the animals suffer from.
回复删除The topic is so cruel but you successfully used some humor factors to satire those selfish human beings. The video starts with the clip from the most popular Korean tv series in recent days which was an amazing try to catch the audiences' eyes. The whole video is like a well organized story. First the tv clip made audience feel so good and enjoy, they even have desperate for the cosmetic that the actress used. However, the cruel teat on animals showed following the romantic clip. The result is that audience will be shocked without preparing for those cruel pictures. The message then can be transmitted to audience smoothly that " no bunny should suffer for the beauty". And the most blinking part in your video is that you not only criticized the selfish behavior but also offered helpful solutions as telling people how to find those products without animal testing.
In the analysis part you gave a lot attention on traditional Chinese culture and its influence on Hong Kong. And this point can be very good point to support the persuasion process. The suggestion for you guys is the video can be a little shorter to be more efficient at catch audiences' attention.
Dear Chloe,
删除Thank you for your sharing, and it did shock us a lot. It seems the problems of abusing animals are bigger than we thought, which is really sad. Have you guys tried to fight for these animals in your school? There are hundreds of medical schools in the world, and we believe your school was not the only one kept these animal for drug testing.
However, it would be better eventually as the technology is growing everyday, and scientists have been proved that there are a lot of alternative choices for animal testing, which are more reliable and cost-efficiency. Let's hope that there is one day that people would stop using animal for testing. Thank you again for your comments, which we really appreciate!

回复删除Hi Team Sparks,
The video is quite astonishing and resonant, as I myself is an animal lover. It is nice that you started the video with the hottest Korean TV series at the moment, and brought in the topic of animal-testing with cosmetics used on the actress. The usage of some scenes from the TV series is pretty attractive and interesting. However, I do have the feeling that the introduction part of your video is way too long. You used in total 1 minute showing photos of beautiful ladies and cosmetics, but I had no idea what topic you want to introduce.
Then you showed pictures of poor animals being tortured in animal-testing, which really shocked me and made me very sad. In this way, you successfully aroused audiences’ sympathy for animals and hatred to animal-testing. Later on, you demonstrated the scenes where people themselves are used in this kind of testing. This method is very effective and persuasive to let people realize what they have done is unfair to our friends – animals.
Overall, I think your video is persuasive but too long. I would suggest you cut the length of the video to less than 3 minutes.
Hope it helps!
Sophia
Dear Sophia,
删除Thank you for your comments!
We admitted that our video was a little bit longer than others. But which was so hard to shorten this amazing and attractive scene in the very beginning, as we struggled a lot to decide whether we should kept it or cut it. However, after several debated sections in our team we decided to keep it for it really attracts people's eyeballs, and it's really beautiful and stands in the very opposite of the cruel pictures later. We wanted to emphasize the contrast feelings of our audience, like you start getting used to be in heaven and a few seconds later you drop to hell.
Your feedback is great! Thank you again!
I am SUN Li (53204618) from Morning Group.
回复删除Since your group and my group have chosen the same topic, I went through your blog and video very carefully. I totally agree with your view about stopping the animal tests. I think I will choose products with leaping bunny icon and I will spread the ideas to other people.
Your video used some clips from the very popular Korean teleplay -- You Who Came from the Star as the beginning and this is a very good idea. It can arise awareness of this issue that our beauty should not be got at the price of these animals’ lives.
You used more evidence and specific data than us about your arguments. The “another related video clip” is very persuasive and powerful. Your work is very impressive. What’s more, the clips in your video are very attractive and the pictures in your blogs are more vivid. And I am shocked by the cruel experiments done on animals in the video. So, we human beings should not build our consuming based on other animals’ sufferings. I think your blog is very helpful and informative to make people get know the situation about these kinds of unethical tests.
Thank you for the positive comments.
删除We have also visited your blog and the video of your group is also very influential.
I think both of our argument based on the notion of treating every living things equally.
Let's keep up with the good work together!

回复删除As a video maker in our group, I believe that you must have paid much time and efforts to this video. It covers huge workload from collecting to assembling pictures and videos. Good video! It successfully persuades people to show mercy and pity to poor animals. Emotional mercy generates from the deep in the mind. We should not have any tolerance to the cruel action. Our world should be cruelty-free and mistreatment-free. These lives should not be treated like tools.
However, I think there are still some parts you need to improve.
First, you need to shorten the video and emphasize importances.
Then, you have well aroused others’ mercy for this issue, but have not listed the measures we could do to relieve the problems, such as advertising natural products, not buying animals from lawbreakers and so on. More measures that we could do should be mentioned to tackle this problems. Or it would be seem too far away from our controls.
Moreover, you could also show the lovely and beautiful side to induce people’s love to these cute lives.
It is an eye-catching issue recently. And you have connect it closely to the nature of human and life in Hong Kong. Good job!
Thank your for your comments and suggestions, they are very insightful.
删除Regarding your first suggestion, our video is indeed longer then that of other teams. It is worth paying attention to the length of the video, so that our audience won't get distracted from the main topic.
And you advised us to provide measure to relieve the animal cruelty problem. In fact our solution to the problem is to exercise our consumer power over the cosmetic manufacturers. You can buy from Leaping Bunny which is guaranteed for cruelty-free, in this scene you have chosen not to buy from the company that permits animal testing.
If consumers make their standpoint clear enough, cosmetic companies can no longer ignore the needs of their customers and they will stop animal testing. In the written part, we also advocate cosmetic companies to adopt animal-free alternatives such as computer simulation and using human tissue for experiment, we should have included these in the video as well, and we thank you for reminding us.
Lastly, you pointed out that showing the adorable side of animals could be a good way to grab attention. We agree with your idea. If we have showed both the cute and the poor side of the animals, we could have created a greater contrast and left greater impression to our audience.
Thank you once again for your great comments.

Thank you for watching our video!
删除You are right that some of the opening content are not essential for conveying our main ideas, Hong Kong people are busy and could be driven away just by looking at the video length.
We could have done better if we had condensed this part.
I like your topic and the video. It’s really impressive and touching for me! Before this video, I have heard about the animal test but I do not know this cruelty process. Your video give me more knowledge about this test and I strongly agree with your attitudes.
回复删除Your video have a special beginning which attract me immediately. Maybe some pictures make me uncomfortable but these let me realize we must stop this cruel activities. Your also provide some evidence to persuade people stop this test, saying “Human body is not the same as that of animals, when it is safe for animals does not mean it is also safe for human. “ you shocked people and put some scientific opinions which I think is an effective way to support your persuasion.
I also have a suggestion for your video. I think you make efforts to explain your idea logically. But I still feel the video could be more efficiency. In your video, you have many similar pictures to describe the same situation. I think you should balance the content and efficiency. I think you have done a very good job. A shorter video may be perfect. Thank you for your video!

Thanks for the comments.
删除Everybody has a favorite animal. We showed picture of different animals so we increased the chance of hitting the right one, but this makes our video longer than average.
You have given us a valuable suggestion to improve. We can try to limit the use of pictures that re-emphasize similar concept and idea, in this way we can make our video shorter.

回复删除This video must be a newly made one as it managed to incorporate the scene in the recent TV series From The Stars in the video, the actress Jun Ji-hyun gets so fabulous under the decoration of cosmetics such as eyeliner, lipstick etc, the magnificent layout in the beginning of this video serves the cruel fact perfectly to reflect that these poor animals are rightly the expense for the cosmetics industry. See the video, one bunny was processed with a special eye-drop, I don’t know the real objective for this kind of experiment, while look at the red and damaged eyes of the bunny and so many dead bodies of bunnies, is the cosmetic industry still beautiful now?
I did know something about animal testing, what I was aware was that animals would not suffer that much, however, I have changed my ideas totally and want to express my support to the organization and website Go Cruelty Free, who has conducted comprehensive research and investigation on this field, the tremendous attempts and efforts made by this organization will change the world for little animals, more importantly, I am sure more and more people especially fashionable girls would be enlightened by this video, they will possibly abandon or reduce their use of cosmetics in their daily life then.
Thanks for visiting our blog.
删除The test you mentioned is to evaluate the severity of eye damage if the cosmetic accidentally enters the eye.
As human eye differs from animal eye, the test result cannot prove that the cosmetic is completely safe for human.
For the sake of animals and humans, cosmetic companies should either use animal-free alternatives or to use more natural ingredients.
We believe that with the continued support from animal lovers around the world, one day we can make the Earth a better place to live for both animals and humans.
